The Kiev Municipal Heart Center, today announced that it will perform a revolutionary bioresorbable vascular scaffold by ABSORB, this will be the first time such surgery has ever been carried out in Eastern Europe and Russia.

The Kiev Municipal Heart Center on October 7th will perform a surgery first time with a revolutionary bioresorbable scaffold (stent). This innovative stent represents a true paradigm shift in how we treat coronary artery disease. With the launch of such surgery with a scaffold that disappears after doing its job is no longer a dream, but a reality,” said Head Cardiologiest of Kiev Heart Center Mr. Todurov, PhD. After the surgery in period of 2 years this new type of stents are completely dissolving in the vessels leaving room for repeated need of stenting or any other related medical procedures. This type of stents were developed by Abbot Vascular (US) and was nominated as Medical Devices category in the 2011 by Wall Street Journal Technology Innovation Awards. “Patients are excited about Absorb since it may allow blood vessels to return to a more natural state and expand long-term diagnostic and treatment options,” said Patrick W. Serruys, M.D., Ph.D., professor of interventional cardiology at the Thoraxcentre, Erasmus University Hospital, Rotterdam, the Netherlands. Mr Surruys beleives that in 2-3 years this new stents will completely replace the old type of stents made of metal.
Heart disease is the leading cause of death for men and women around the world, and CAD is the most common type of heart disease. CAD occurs when arteries that supply blood to the heart become narrowed or blocked, leading to chest pain or shortness of breath and increased risk of heart attack.
